Biography

Jill Carvalho is an experienced litigator and counselor who works with companies, executives, and directors to solve problems creatively, with an eye to what’s best for their businesses.  She can draft winning briefs and develop effective settlement strategies, depending on the client’s goals. She specializes in breach of fiduciary duty and fraud cases, and advises companies on corporate governance issues.  She works in federal and state court and at regulatory agencies, including the Texas Public Utility Commission and the SEC.

Jill has worked extensively with clients in the energy industry, including oil and gas exploration and engineering, midstream companies, and those dealing with permitting and electricity regulatory challenges. Other clients include many in the healthcare space, such as ones working in healthcare tech, operating clinics and ERs, and biopharmaceutical companies developing innovative drugs

Jill worked in “Big Law” for ten years before joining Burke Law Group.  She attended the University of Texas School of Law, where she was Managing Editor of the Texas Review of Law and Politics and an officer in the Federalist Society.

In her pre-law life, Jill was a professor of political science at American University in Washington, D.C., teaching and researching about American politics and institutions.  Her research was quantitative, and she still enjoys digging into the numbers and data of a company’s financial condition and business models.  She received her Ph.D from Duke University and her B.A. from Smith College.

Jill is from Boston, Massachusetts, but she got to Texas as fast as she could.  She no longer ‘pahks her cah’, instead saying ‘y’all’ as appropriate.  She has lived in Austin for nearly 15 years, so she has watched the city grow from a small town to a city alive with exciting start-ups and great restaurants.  She enjoys time with her spirited young sons, her husband, and her dog.
